So a few weeks before our trip, I booked us a tour to the Island of Capri. This is a little 7 square mile island off the coast of Naples and we had heard it is amazing. It totally didn't disappoint! The bus picked us up, not so bright but very early, at 6:45AM. We had a three hour bus ride down to Naples where we caught our boat to take us over.
Firstly, Naples, from what we saw, was a very nasty, very dirty city. Lots and lots of trash, shanty towns, graffiti, etc. From what we saw and what we've heard, we probably wouldn't make that a destination in the future. Luckily for us, it was just a short stop there.
On the boat ride over we got a good view of the mainland. We saw Mt. Vesuvius (the volcano that covered Pompeii), and the entire Amalfi(sp?) coast. Sorrento was gorgeous, as was Mt. Vesuvius!
Capri is a beautiful and breath taking little island. It has massive cliffs and climb to 1500 ft above sea level. There are two towns on the Island, Capri which is the shore, but the main downtown area is at 500ft above sea level. Anacapri is at 1000ft above sealevel and from there you can take a chair lift to the very top at 1500 ft(which we did).
There is only one road up to Anacapri. It is a steep climb and they had to cut into the rockface to build it. Now the roads on the Island would be considered a one way road in America, but there, it has traffic going both ways. The climb to this was gorgeous but definitely scary. On one of the switchbacks up, Jon saw a shell of a car that had fallen down 100 ft or so. Once on this section of the road, the only thing keeping you from falling is an iron gate......like the one in my banister! Yikes!
This is the picture I got when I put my camera up to the window of the bus. Seriously inches from the edge! Gorgeous though!
Once up on top, Jon and I took the chairlift up to the very tippy top.
This is the view from up top!
We toured around a little more, did a little mores shopping and then it was time to get back on the boat and head to the mainland. The Colosseum was both of our favorite parts of the trip, but this was by far our favorite day. If I had a few million dollars to drop, I would buy me a nice little 700sq ft condo on the island with the rest of the rich and famous:)
By the time we made it back to Rome, it was well after 10:30 and like every other day, we were beyond exhausted. Seriously a fabulous fabulous day!!!
